About Us
Our Mission
The primary mission of our project is to digitize and popularize Polish theater music from the 20th century. The works of many outstanding composers are stored in the archives of Polish theaters, preserved only on magnetic tapes – we are changing that. We do not want these compositions, numbering in the tens of thousands, to be forgotten and simply cease to exist.
In parallel with activities that direct our attention to the past, we collaborate with active creators – both composers of the younger generation and established artists with extensive portfolios. We are committed to creating space for intergenerational dialogue and presenting a broad spectrum of contemporary creative attitudes. It is important for us to give artists the opportunity to express themselves and present their ideas to a wide audience.
We are primarily interested in interesting and valuable music – regardless of the composer's age, experience or artistic background. That is why Music Granar is a platform open to all composers who share these values. We invite both artists with extensive experience and those who are just starting out to collaborate with us. The Artistic Collaboration Coordinator is waiting for interesting proposals, contacts and collaborations at the following address: kompozytorzy@musicgranar.com
Who Are We?
We are a rapidly growing team of several people: intergenerational, with different temperaments and passions. Among us you will find students, masters and professors; a pilot, a philosopher, an architect, a Finnish translator; professional musicians and sound engineers with many years of experience. What unites us all is a passion and an undisguised love of music.
Thanks to the differences that exist between us, we constantly have the opportunity to look at our ideas from many perspectives and learn from each other on a daily basis – not only in the field of work.
The stability and technological development of Music Granar are supported by the experienced software house 21 Strun. Thanks to this partnership, Music Granar is not a static archive but a living, evolving platform – one that continuously adapts and improves to meet the needs of users and creators alike.
A Brief History
Janusz Stokłosa – the visionary behind Music Granar – is a composer, conductor, pianist, and publisher who began his professional career in 1976. This extensive experience gave birth to the idea of preserving music composed specifically for theatrical performances, and its result is a music database and hundreds of digitized magnetic tapes.
Despite the many changes since the project’s beginnings in 2022, one thing remains constant: we aim to give artists access to top-quality music created by professionals. At the same time, as the platform grew, we increasingly recognized the need to expand its scope. Through the process of developing and refining Music Granar, we realized that while theatre music remains its foundation, it does not encompass the full range of possibilities and needs of today’s creators and audiences.
We want Music Granar to be a vibrant space – one that offers a broad spectrum of possibilities, a source of music to rediscover, reinterpret, and use in diverse contexts – from theatre and audiovisual forms to media and advertising. Our awareness of the diversity of musical forms, genres, and applications became the driving force behind the creation of a universal database that gives sound a second life.
