Elżbieta Sikora

Elżbieta Sikora – composer, pioneer of Polish electroacoustic music. She graduated from the Department of Sound Engineering at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw in 1968. From 1968 to 1970, she studied electroacoustic music at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris under Pierre Schaeffer and François Bayle. After returning to Warsaw, she continued her composition studies with Tadeusz Baird and Zbigniew Rudziński. In 1973, she founded the composer group KEW. Since 1981, she has lived in France, where she continued her education in computer music at IRCAM and studied composition with Betsy Jolas in Paris. As a scholarship holder of the Kosciuszko Foundation, she studied computer music at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University under John Chowning. Composition is her main occupation, although she also conducts workshops and lectures. Her works are performed worldwide, and many have been released on CDs. In 2013, she received the award from the Polish Composers' Union for outstanding compositional work, the opera Madame Curie, and curatorial activities. In 2014, she was honored with the title of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture. Born in 1943. Photo: Bartosz Krupa
