
Alfonso el Sabio
Born November 23, 1221, in Toledo, died April 4, 1284, in Seville
King of Castile and León from 1252; Spanish composer of medieval music, poet, and patron of the arts. He inspired and co-created the Cantigas de Santa Maria, a vast collection of Marian hymns, constituting one of the most important monuments of Spanish music. He composed monodic music. He combined elements of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish culture at the Spanish court in the 13th century.
